A 22-year-old mentally challenged woman was allegedly gangraped by a cleric and his accomplice in Kharkhoda, around 20 kms from Meerut. The accused were identified as Mohammed Hussain, the Imam at a mosque in Meerut, and Abdul Rashid. They were arrested on Tuesday while trying to take the girl to Hapur.
A resident of Delhi, the girl had come to Meerut to meet someone. She told the police that she was spotted by the two at Hapur bypass around Monday midnight. They assured her of escorting her to a safe place, but instead, took her near a patrol pump and raped her repeatedly, she alleged.
Later, the duo decided to take her back to the spot from where they picked her up. On their way back, however, they were stopped by a night patrol police who had heard the woman’s cries for help.
“At first, they told us that she is their sister, but the woman pleaded to be freed from them. On being asked again sternly, they accepted that they had raped her,” said Kharkhoda station in-charge Vindhyachal Tiwari. “A woman police constable was called who took the victim to the Mahila police station while the two were arrested and sent to jail,” he added,
The medical examination of the woman was conducted today, while efforts are on to trace her family, police sources said. Meanwhile, the court remanded the accused to 14-day police custody.
