JAKARTA, Indonesia—Indonesian authorities were investigating possible links to the militant group Islamic State after a suicide bomber on a motorcycle blew himself up in an attack on a police station in central Java early Tuesday.
Inspector General Condro Kirono, chief of the Central Java police, said one officer was injured when the bomber entered the grounds of police headquarters in the city of Solo. Police said they are still investigating the attacker’s identity, and that the situation is under control.
Sutiyoso, the head of Indonesia’s national intelligence agency, told private news channel Kompas TV it was very likely the attacker had ties to Islamic State, which has been linked to deadly attacks in Turkey and Bangladesh in recent days.
“Everything needs to be explored further, but…there’s indeed a tendency” to believe there is a connection, said the intelligence chief, who goes by one name.
The Solo attack took place a day before Indonesia, which has the world’s largest Muslim population, celebrates the festival of Eid al-Fitr, to mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. Government offices and many businesses are closed for the week around the country.
Solo has long been a nerve center for fundamentalist Islam in Indonesia, with radical religious leaders developing followings there….
